Initially used for pasturing cattle, the island is subsequently purchased by private owners, including Thomas Hutchinson, father of the future governor, in 1723. An Englishman named Marsh settles on the island with his family and purchases it in 1822 and at his death his buried there. The island is purchased by Boston in 1867 and used as a gravel pit. It is sold again to private owners, then subsequently purchased to become part of the expanded Logan Airport.
